Privacy Policy for Toaster
Last updated: October 26, 2026
Welcome to "Toaster", an app for Mac, iPhone and Apple TV that listens to music and writes it out as live Strudel code over visuals (the "Service"). We at Insula Technology Inc. ("we", "us", "our") respect your privacy.
This Privacy Policy (the "Policy") explains our privacy practices for the Service. Toaster has no accounts and no Toaster server. What it hears and sees is processed on your device, and we never receive it.
In short
The following key points of the Privacy Policy are only brought for your convenience. They are not a substitute for the full Policy.
- Information we collect. None. We have no servers that receive your data, and the app contains no analytics, advertising, tracking or third-party SDKs.
- Audio. The sound Toaster listens to (what your Mac plays, a microphone, or an audio file you open) is analysed on your device as it plays. It is never uploaded, and it is not saved unless you record a video or export a song.
- Camera. The camera is optional. Its picture, and the hands and face Apple's Vision framework finds in it, are processed on your device and kept only in a video you record.
- Radio. Radio streams come directly from the stations, which see your IP address like any website you visit. To show a song's cover, its title and artist are looked up in Apple's iTunes Search API.
- Recordings and exports. They are saved on your device only when you make them, and shared only when you share them.
- General audience. Because we collect no personal information, no information is collected about children of any age.
- Changes to the Policy. We may change this Policy. The latest version will always be accessible on our website.
In detail
INFORMATION WE COLLECT
We do not collect personal information from users of Toaster. The Service has no sign-up, no Toaster account, and no server of ours that your data is sent to.
Toaster does not include any third-party analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting frameworks or other third-party SDKs, and does not track you across other apps or websites.
AUDIO
Toaster listens only to the source you pick:
- On the Mac: what your Mac plays (system audio, which macOS asks you to allow), a microphone or line-in you pick, including a nearby iPhone's microphone, or an audio file you open
- On iPhone: the iPhone's microphone, or an audio file you open
- On Apple TV: the microphone of an iPhone or iPad you pick for it
- On every device: the built-in radio stations, or the built-in demo beat
The sound is analysed on your device as it plays, to find the beat, the drums, the bass line and the chords and write them out as code. The song so far is held only in the app's memory, so that you can export it. Audio is never uploaded, and it is not saved to your device unless you record a video or export a song.
On the Mac, Toaster also reads the title, artist and cover of the song your Mac says is playing, to show them in the app. They stay on your Mac.
CAMERA
The camera is off until you turn it on. On the Mac and iPhone, Toaster uses the device's camera; on Apple TV, it uses an iPhone or iPad you pick as its camera. The picture is shown behind the code, and Apple's Vision framework finds your hands, face and outline in it, on your device, for the finger frame, the portals, the hand signs and the camera effects.
Camera frames are never uploaded and are not stored. The picture is kept only in a video you choose to record on the Mac or iPhone. Apple TV does not record.
RADIO AND OTHER NETWORK REQUESTS
Toaster connects to the internet only for the following:
- Radio. When you play a station, its stream is fetched directly from the station: SomaFM, Radio Paradise, KEXP, NTS, dublab, Radio France (FIP) or rodizio.fm. Like any website you visit, the station sees your IP address and basic details of the request. Each station's handling of that information is governed by its own privacy policy.
- Song covers. While a station plays, the title and artist of the current song are sent to Apple's iTunes Search API to find the song's cover. Apple's handling of that request is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
- Open in Strudel. On the Mac and iPhone, if you choose to open the code in Strudel, your browser opens strudel.cc with the code in the link.
Toaster does not add any account, device or advertising identifier to these requests, and none of them are sent to us.
ON-DEVICE CONTENT
Toaster saves its settings on your device, such as the source, station, background, theme and the keys you have changed, so that the app behaves consistently between sessions. Settings are stored only in the app's storage on your device and are not transmitted to us. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
Recordings and exports are saved only when you make them:
- On the Mac: videos and drop clips in Movies › Toaster, and songs exported as MIDI and Strudel code in Music › Toaster
- On iPhone: videos and drop clips in your photo library (or, if Toaster may not add to Photos, in Files › On My iPhone › Toaster), and exported songs in Files › On My iPhone › Toaster
- On Apple TV: nothing is recorded or exported
While drop clips are turned on, the last few seconds of video are held in the app's temporary storage on your device so that a clip can be cut from them, and discarded unless a clip is saved. Recordings and exports stay on your device until you delete them, and are shared only when and where you share them.
PHOTOS
On iPhone, when you first save a video, Toaster asks for permission to add videos to your photo library; it cannot read your library with that permission. When you open an audio file, the system picker gives the app only the file you choose.
GENERAL AUDIENCE
Toaster is rated for general audiences and is not directed at children. We do not collect any personal information from any user, so we do not knowingly or intentionally collect information about children.
If you are under the legal age of majority in your jurisdiction, you should obtain permission from a parent or legal guardian before using the Service.
SHARING COLLECTED INFORMATION
We do not share personal information with any third parties, because we do not collect any.
APPLE'S ROLE
Toaster is distributed through the Apple App Store. Apple may independently collect information about your download and use of the app pursuant to Apple's own privacy practices, which are not controlled by us. Learn more at https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/en-ww/.
CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS
The following disclosure is made pursuant to the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CA Civil Code § 22575): When you use the Service, we do not track your activities across other websites or services and do not respond to "Do Not Track" signals from browsers.
DATA RETENTION
We do not retain personal information about users of the Service. Settings remain on your device until you uninstall the app. Recordings and exports remain on your device until you delete them.
INFORMATION SECURITY
We rely on Apple's device-level security to protect on-device content. Radio streams and cover lookups use encrypted HTTPS. No method of digital storage is 100% secure, but the absence of data collection materially reduces privacy risk.

CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY
From time to time, we may change this Policy. The latest version of this Policy will always be accessible on our website. Continued use of the Service after the effective date of the amended Policy constitutes your consent.
The radio stations in Toaster are independent of Insula Technology Inc. Toaster is not made, sponsored or endorsed by them, by Apple, or by Strudel.
